na kāṅkṣhe vijayaṁ kṛiṣhṇa na cha rājyaṁ sukhāni cha
kiṁ no rājyena govinda kiṁ bhogair jīvitena vā||32||

yeṣhām arthe kāṅkṣhitaṁ no rājyaṁ bhogāḥ sukhāni cha
ta ime ’vasthitā yuddhe prāṇāṁs tyaktvā dhanāni cha||33||

Meaning : I do not desire victory, O Krishna, nor kingdom, nor pleasures.
What good will kingdom, pleasures, or life be to us, O Govinda,
when those for whose sake we desire these things are standing here, ready to give up their lives and wealth in battle?

vepathuśh cha śharīre me roma-harṣhaśh cha jāyate
gāṇḍīvaṁ sraṁsate hastāt tvak chaiva paridahyate||29||

na cha śhaknomy avasthātuṁ bhramatīva cha me manaḥ||30||

nimittāni cha paśhyāmi viparītāni keśhava
na cha śhreyo ’nupaśhyāmi hatvā sva-janam āhave||31||

Meaning : My body trembles, the hair on my skin stands on end, the mighty bow Gandiva slips from my hand, and my skin feels like it is burning.
I am unable to stand firm, and my mind is confused and wandering.
I see only unfavorable omens, O Keshava (Krishna), and I do not see any good in killing my own relatives in battle.

arjuna uvācha
dṛiṣhṭvemaṁ sva-janaṁ kṛiṣhṇa yuyutsuṁ samupasthitam
sīdanti mama gātrāṇi mukhaṁ cha pariśhuṣhyati||28||

Meaning : Arjuna said: “Seeing my own relatives, O Krishna, ready to fight, my limbs are trembling, and my mouth is drying up.

tān samīkṣhya sa kaunteyaḥ sarvān bandhūn avasthitān
kṛipayā parayāviṣhṭo viṣhīdann idam abravīt||27||

Meaning : Seeing all his relatives standing there, Arjuna (Kaunteya, son of Kunti) was overwhelmed with deep compassion and sorrow, and he spoke the following words in distress.

tatrāpaśhyat sthitān pārthaḥ pitṝīn atha pitāmahān
āchāryān mātulān bhrātṝīn putrān pautrān sakhīṁs tathā||26||
śhvaśhurān suhṛidaśh chaiva senayor ubhayor api

Meaning : There, Arjuna (Partha) saw standing on both sides of the battlefield — fathers, grandfathers, teachers, uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, friends, fathers-in-law, and well-wishers.

bhīṣhma-droṇa-pramukhataḥ sarveṣhāṁ cha mahī-kṣhitām
uvācha pārtha paśhyaitān samavetān kurūn iti||25||

Meaning : Placing the chariot in front of Bhishma, Drona, and all the other kings, Krishna said to Arjuna (Partha), “Look at these assembled Kurus, O Arjuna.”

sañjaya uvācha
evam ukto hṛiṣhīkeśho guḍākeśhena bhārata
senayor ubhayor madhye sthāpayitvā rathottamam||24||

Meaning : Sanjaya said: “O King (Dhritarashtra), when Gudakesha (Arjuna) spoke in this way, Hrishikesha (Krishna) placed the finest chariot between the two armies

yotsyamānān avekṣhe ’haṁ ya ete ’tra samāgatāḥ
dhārtarāṣhṭrasya durbuddher yuddhe priya-chikīrṣhavaḥ||23||

Meaning : I want to see those who have gathered here to fight, eager to please the evil-minded son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana) by supporting him in this war.

arjuna uvācha
senayor ubhayor madhye rathaṁ sthāpaya me ’chyuta||21||

yāvadetān nirīkṣhe ’haṁ yoddhu-kāmān avasthitān
kairmayā saha yoddhavyam asmin raṇa-samudyame||22||

Meaning : Arjuna said, “O Acyuta (Krishna), please place my chariot between the two armies so that I can see those who are eager to fight and determine with whom I must battle in this great war.”

atha vyavasthitān dṛiṣhṭvā dhārtarāṣhṭrān kapi-dhwajaḥ
pravṛitte śhastra-sampāte dhanurudyamya pāṇḍavaḥ||20||
hṛiṣhīkeśhaṁ tadā vākyam idam āha mahī-pate

Meaning : O King, seeing the Kauravas (sons of Dhritarashtra) ready for battle, Arjuna (whose chariot bears the flag of Hanuman) picked up his bow. Just as the battle was about to begin, he spoke these words to Krishna (Hrishikesha).
